International Urban Design Competition for Kings Cross Square, London
Camden Council and land owner Network Rail are seeking expressions of interest from architects, landscape architects and urban designers for the design of a brand new, urban square at Kings Cross, London. The new square, occupying 7000m2 directly in front of the historic Grade 1 listed façade to Kings Cross must be able to cope with up to one hundred thousand commuters, visitors and residents every day. The anticipated budget for the project is six million pounds at today's cost.
An international, two-stage design competition has been announced simultaneously in the Official Journal of the European Union (OJEU) and on a dedicated competition website (www.malcolmreading.co.uk/kingsxsquare|).
The first stage of the competition invites a response from international participants before the end of July who are asked to submit credentials and relevant experience. From these responses a shortlist of six will be chosen to work up concept propositions, for which an honorarium of £6000 will be paid. These will be reviewed by a technical panel and a final decision made by a jury that will meet in early December.
The competition is being managed by Malcolm Reading Consultants in association with the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) Competitions Office. The competition also has the support of the Landscape Institute. For information on how to enter visit the web site www.malcolmreading.co.uk or email kingsxsquare@malcolmreading.co.uk .
The deadline for Stage One submissions is 1 August 2008.

Tom Friedman, Monsters and Stuff
May 30 - July 25, 2008. Tue-Sat 10-6
6-24 Britannia Street, London WC1X 9JD
Gagosian Gallery is pleased to announce the opening of Monsters and Stuff, new work by Tom Friedman. This will be his first solo exhibition at the London gallery.
Empiricist, alchemist, sage, and prankster, Friedman invents startling works of art by taking very ordinary materials - paper, wire, cardboard, plastic cups, pencils, foam core, glitter, Styrofoam - and transforming them using highly specific processes. Whether constructing or deconstructing the object, either on a microscopic or macroscopic level, he meditates on all manner of material existence from dust bunnies to the cosmos, from the idea of nothing to the idea of everything.

The October Gallery
Angaza Afrika - African Art Now
15 May – NOW EXTENDED to 26th July 2008
www.octobergallery.co.uk
The exhibition brings together major works by 12 artists who best represent the innovative and dynamic artistic practices across the African continent and the African diasporas and launches the book, Angaza Afrika – African Art Now - a highly visual survey of contemporary African art compiled by Christopher Spring, curator of the African Galleries at The British Museum, and published by Laurence King.
Angaza Afrika, translated from the Swahili to mean ‘Shed light on Africa’ or ‘Look around Africa’, is comprehensive in its range. Each work will be a stunning visual and physical manifestation of the artists’ energy and spirit, such as Rachid Koraïchi’s Sufi- inspired black and white appliqué work and the beautiful work of South African artist Karel Nel, who sets vast leaves from the Coco de Mer palms in atmospheric, elemental architectural spaces.

Chantal Akerman
11 July - 14 September 2008
Chantal Akerman is widely regarded as one of the most significant artists and film directors of her generation.
For this, her first solo exhibition in a UK public gallery, she shows two installations alongside a single screen film from 1972 'Hotel Monterey'. Her films shift between experimental, documentary and narrative formats and are all closely related to feminism, sexuality and her family history (Polish Jews who moved to Belgium after the war).
'To Walk Next to One's Shoelaces in an Empty Fridge' (2004) is an enigmatic two part video installation that traces the content of Akerman's maternal grandmother's adolescent diary. This rare document was miraculously discovered after she perished at Auschwitz.
'Women from Antwerp in November' (2007) contains a compelling series of images reminiscent of early French and American film noir. Two projections feature women smoking in different settings; the compendium of images carries social, political and emotional implications.
Anya Gallaccio
11 July - 14 September 2008
Anya Gallaccio's spectacular new installation connects Camden Arts Centre's garden to the galleries, bringing the outdoors inside. The new piece is firmly rooted in the site, as if nature has broken into the space pushing through the gallery floor and walls. Using organic transient materials, Gallaccio’s intervention is impressive in its visual impact and physicality.
Gallaccio's work is concerned with nature, beauty and decay, she uses ephemeral materials to refer to the cyclic nature of life and death. Her sculptures' multi-sensory and experimental elements allow you to engage with the rich tactile qualities. Past installations include real chocolate and sugar, rotting and decayed fruit, and trees cast in bronze.

St Pancras Church Crypt
de Transcendental: A solo exhibition by Deon Winter
5 – 16 July 2008 Private view: Friday 4 July, 6-9pm
Opening times: noon – 6.30pm
Deon Winter's work creates a transient atmosphere transporting the viewer through the complexities of light where she explores the power of light within the atmosphere of the crypt. Winter’s 3D sculptural spaces interact with the viewer engaging them with the 2D collection, transcending beyond the normal realms of perception.
She writes: The development of my work is informed by my interest in the non-tangible nature of light, its ability to become part of an ambience or atmosphere, to transform into a physical presence. I manipulate light within a controlled environment in order to build the enigmatic, mysterious and playful, sculpting light to take the viewer on a sensory journey through the complexities of perception, which translate into a gateway for the imagination.

Sponsor Enterprising Camden 2008 and the Better Climate for Camden Green Business Awards 2009:
Enterprising Camden 2008 is the borough’s efforts to support Make Your Mark and national Enterprise Week, the campaign to harness entrepreneurial potential in the UK. This year’s theme is Global Entrepreneurship and we are offering Camden businesses the opportunity to sponsor our programme in the following ways:
• Main sponsor for the week’s activities
• Sponsor a specific event
• Sponsor the promotion of the week’s activities
• Sponsor our Education Business Partnership events
We are looking for a financial contribution and/or in kind support from businesses. We’ll profile your support in our newsletters, e-bulletins, websites, and via local newspapers and dedicated Enterprising Camden 2008 brochure.
Our target audience is businesses in Camden – large, small and tiny, and people thinking of starting up a business at any age.
Better Climate for Camden (BC4C) Green Awards 2009 will build on the huge success of the 2008 awards ceremony which celebrated the success of the BC4C programme in supporting Camden’s business community to green their business to reduce their impact on the environment and to reduce their loses through inefficient practices.
Previous winners range from Warner Bros, to Consolidated, and the Goodenough College across a variety of categories including most improved business, best staff initiative and most innovative work place initiative.
The awards ceremony will be held in a prestigious location in Camden and we expect 250 business representatives to attend across a range of sectors, areas and sizes of business who have engaged with the BC4C programme.

Shape
Open the Door Training
Disabled and deaf audiences demand more than ramps.
It’s more than just getting the physical access right. It’s about your attitude, the policies you uphold, how you communicate and so much more. Despite a wave of equalities legislation in recent years, disabled and deaf people are still effectively barred from many of the UK’s museums, galleries and theatres.
Shape is challenging arts organisations and creative business to ask themselves;
• When did your staff last attend disability equality training?
• Are your Front of House/ Customer Service staff confident when welcoming deaf or disabled customers?
• Are your marketing materials accessible?
• Do your colleagues know what your disability action plan is for, you have one…..right?

EMERGING ARTISTS PROGRAMME AT KINGSGATE WORKSHOPS
Kingsgate Workshops Trust & Gallery
Kingsgate Workshops Trust maintains a building that welcomes practitioners from the arts and crafts. Through its education projects and Gallery exhibitions, the Trust aims to make these creative skills available to local audiences. Studio holders enter into a licence agreement with Kingsgate Workshops Trust and are expected to contribute to this programme as part of the licence agreement. Kingsgate Workshops Trust values the wide range of arts and crafts represented by the licence holders. We aim to maintain this wide-ranging balance of work.
The Trust is keen to encourage new artists to develop their practice and has launched a programme for emerging artists. The programme includes studio space, offered for an 12-month period, mentoring support by established artists within the building, a small bursary and an exhibition in the Kingsgate Gallery 2009.
Applications for these spaces are welcomed from artists who have graduated within the last three years. Preference will be given to applicants who have graduated from a recognised London Borough of Camden education institution / or and live in the borough of Camden.
Selection will be based not only on the quality of artistic work but also on the candidate’s ability to contribute to Kingsgate Workshops Trust and the emerging artist programme. The studios cost £100 per calendar month. Deposits are part of the licence agreement. The studios will become available as of the 1st Jan 2009, applications must be submitted by the 1st October 2008.

Opportunities in Film and Animation
Frieze Film 2008 - Road Movie
Artists and film-makers are currently invited to submit films for Frieze Film 2008: Road Movie to contribute to a multi-authored fractal film to be produced and distributed on YouTube. This year's Frieze Film is an experiment in film-making, authorship and dispersal made in response to the way in which digital platforms such as YouTube have made film a medium freely available to all.
Inspired by Cormac McCarthy's 2006 novel 'The Road', Frieze Film will not have a conventional narrative: in addition to submitting original material, visitors to YouTube will be able to download and refashion existent clips, spurring a chain-reaction of multiple narratives and occurrences.
For further information visit the Frieze Film website. http://www.frieze.com/film

Created in 1989 by The Place’s Theatre Director John Ashford, Resolution! is a 6-week season of nightly changing triple bills that runs through January and February.
